The race begins at midnight (0:00) on Friday, January 15th 2020. We furiously read all though the year, and the person who’s read the most by midnight (23:59:59) on Friday, January 14th 2022 wins great glory!
We compete based on a points system: when you enter the books you are reading, you'll estimate how "difficult" they are on a 1-5 point scale. This will be multiplied by the page count of the book to generate the "difficulty points" for each book.
Additionally, when multiple participants in the contest read the same book, "book club bonus" points will be assigned. We hope sharing books will unite our community, and help socialize a usually-solitary activity. The following table shows how the bonus works:
Number of people reading the same book | Points multiplier |
---|---|
1 | 1 |
2 | 1.5 |
3 | 2 |
4 | 2.25 |
5 | 2.50 |
6 | 2.75 |
7 | 3 (max) |
For example, say that you read: CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG. This book is 32 pages long. For its difficulty estimate, you'll choose "Children's book," which means that it's worth 1 point per page. So this book is worth 32 pages * 1 point per page = 32 points.
Another example:
THUS SPAKE ZARATHUSTRA Philosophy 220 pages, both Meg Trowbridge & Meg Cohen read it
4 points per page * 220 pages * 1.5 multiple readers bonus = 1,320 points.
